Anglers and Soldiers Win in Kingston



Kingston, ON: Corey Johnston of Peterborough, Ontario wowed the crowd on the 3rd and final day at the Kingston Canadian Open of Fishing this past weekend by weighing in an impressive 71.90 pounds (15 bass) over three days. Johnston took home a first place prize of $35,000 in cash.

2nd place was captured by Derek Strub with 65.45 pounds and Real Fishing’s Bob Izumi placed 3rd with 63.85 pounds. Corey Johnston’s brother Chris was 4th with 62.60 pounds.

In the Amateur or Non-Boater division, Paul Legacey came first with 66.80 pounds and won a $12,000 Lund Boat/Mercury Motor package. Last year’s Amateur winner, Darren Izumi, placed 2nd with 63.15 pounds.
Another big winner this past weekend was the Kingston Military Family Resource Centre. The Kingston Canadian Open of Fishing raised $17,000 for the Centre. The KMFRC is a registered non-profit, charitable organization that supports and enhances the health and well-being of the military community.

There was a new twist to this year’s tournament. Thirteen (13) lucky Canadian Forces Members competed in the non-boater division thanks to sponsorships from pro anglers and corporations.

Tom Brooke, Valley Metal Finishing Ltd., Optimus Ltd., Spring Fishing & Boat Show, Dave Mercer Outdoors, Don McCaw, Tri-Con Concrete Finishing Ltd., Royal Ready Mix, Mitten Inc. and Abu Garcia each paid the $750 entry fee and gave Military Members the chance to win thousands of dollars in prizes.

The Canadian Open of Fishing was sponsored by Shimano, Lund Boats, Mercury Marine, Radio World, Pure Fishing, G. Loomis, Power Pro, Everstart Batteries, The Spring Fishing and Boat Show, and the Competitive Sport Fishing League (CSFL).

The Kingston Canadian Open of Fishing was a live release tournament. Fish caught during the three day competition were returned to Lake Ontario each day via the Shimano Live Release System.
